Candace Mixon earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.A. from McGill University, and her B.A. from Vanderbilt University. They are currently Visiting Assistant Professor of Religion and the Humanities at Reed College, Portland, Oregon.

Her first monograph will be published in late 2026 with Bloomsbury Studies in Material Religion, Fatimeh Matters In Contemporary Iran: ShiʿismGender, and Culture. This book is focused on contemporary Shiʻism in Iran through an analysis of Fatimeh, daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, using a collection and examination of devotional visual and material culture. They consider the significance of Fatimeh al-Zahra in contemporary Iran and especially in the cities of Mashhad and Qom as produced through material artifacts and ritual commemorations since the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988).

Dr. Mixon is also widely published across various sub-fields in Islamic, religious, and media studies, including entries on Islamic reform, Sufism and relics, film studies, Islamophobia, and material culture studies of religion.

Candace is also an associate editor and book review editor for the journal Material Religion.
